From Battle Harbour to Port au Choix
Departure from Battle Harbour (August 16, 2024)
Battle Harbour is a very old fishing village known for its cod fishing in the Labrador Sea. It is a very quiet and pleasant place, but we unfortunately had to move on quickly. As we left the harbor of Battle Harbour, we enjoyed the surrounding scenery. The weather was good at the start of the day, but later the wind picked up to around 5 Beaufort, causing the waves to grow higher and hit us head-on. Fortunately, the journey wasn’t too long, and by late afternoon, we entered the harbor.
Arrival in Red Bay
Just before reaching the harbor, we suddenly spotted dolphins, which is always a delightful sight. We docked at a pier meant for visitors, which was shared with whale-watching boats. In the evening, a fishing boat arrived, but it left the next morning.
Departure from Red Bay (August 18, 2024)
After spending two nights in Red Bay, it was time to depart. There wasn’t much to do in Red Bay, so we took the opportunity to get the boat in order again. Just before we set off, we saw a minke whale swimming around in the bay. Minke whales are the second smallest baleen whales. They typically live between 30 and 50 years, but in some cases, they may live up to 60 years. We set our course for Port au Choix, leaving Labrador behind us. To reach Port au Choix, we had to cross a traffic separation scheme. It wasn’t busy, and we only saw one cargo ship.
Port au Choix
We sailed along the coast of Newfoundland, which offered a beautiful view thanks to its stunning coastline. We wanted to stay close to the shore to avoid the waves, which became larger as the afternoon progressed. As expected, we had to sail against the waves for the last two hours. The islands off Port au Choix provided some shelter, thankfully. After an 80 nautical mile day, we arrived in the harbor and found a good spot at a floating dock. It had been a while since we had a place like this, and it was quite pleasant.
